Summer is just around the corner, and most of us could not be happier that we have made it through the harsher months of the year. Despite the joy summer and the warm sun rays bring, seniors should be taking the time to protect their skin. This is because, although the sun can do a lot to improve our immune system and helps us be in a better mood, it can really do a number on our skin. An integral part of in home care for elderly should always entail skin protection for seniors.
You may be eager to get outside and take advantage of the warmer weather. But, before you do get out there and start spending time outdoors, let’s take a look at what you can do to make sure your skin is staying protected.
Here are some tips for helping older adults stay healthy as they spend more time outdoors:
Cleanse Your Skin Properly
It is no secret that everybody sweats more during the summer months. Sweating is good for us, but, it does mean that we have to take better care of our skin during the summer. It is pertinent we keep our skin fresh and clean. When choosing a soap, in home care for elderly professionals say you should always go for a mild soap or cleanser designed particularly with seniors in mind. This may seem odd, but it is true, seniors need soap for more sensitive skin. Classic soaps are too abrasive.
Moisturize on a Regular Basis
Pretty much everybody is under the impression that skin needs to be moisturized only in the winter. That could not be farther from the truth. Your skin can get just as dry during the summer if for no other reason than air conditioning.
Sunscreen Is a Must
Doctors recommend seniors use SPF 50 at all times when they are outdoors. It is important to reapply sunscreen on a regular basis throughout the day. Applying it only once when you head out will not do.
Drink Plenty of Fluids
Staying hydrated is important for skin as well. It helps the skin rid itself of toxins and stay healthy.
Stay Indoors Between 10 am and 4 pm
This is the hottest part of the day and it should be avoided if at all possible by people over the age of 65 according to in home care for elderly professionals.
