How to Aide Someone Coping with the Loss of Loved One in Maple Grove

Dec 7, 2018 by The Crafty Caregiver

Sadly, too many older adults face the holidays without their lifelong companion, spouse, or dear friend by their side. As we age, we continually suffer the loss of friends and family we have loved.

Sometimes this time of year can cause even more grief and sadness than the rest of the year. Gift shopping and decorating can bring emotional pain.

The year-end holidays are a challenge for many older adults, yet there are helpful remedies you can try. Here are some ideas:

  • Console and remind the grieving adult that his or her feelings of sadness or loneliness are normal during the holiday season. Affirm that you recognize some family gatherings or events may feel painful. Accepting that the holidays are difficult may help the adult to feel prepared in advance.
  • Allow older adults ample healing time without pressure to participate in holiday activities they’re just not ready for.
  • Identify which activities may be the most difficult and explain to other friends or family members, so they can be supportive.
  • Urge the adult to maintain exercise and healthy eating, even during a time of grieving.
  • New holiday traditions may make someone feel better. Suggest something very different this year like volunteering for a good cause.
  • Tell the adult it’s alright to ask for assistance during a time of need. Remind him or her about loving friends, family members, neighbors, grieving support groups, or other resources nearby.
